Neighborhood Public Radio (NPR)

Founded in late 2003, Neighborhood Public Radio (NPR) is an independent, artist-run radio project committed to providing an alternative media platform for artists, activists, musicians, and community members. NPR's motto is, "If it's in the neighborhood and it makes noise, we hope to put it on the air." NPR is comprised of Linda Arnejo, Elizabeth Biddlecombe, Jon Brumit, Lee Montgomery, Katina Papson, Michael Trigilio, and Zefrey Throwell, among others.

As the FCC attempts to make it easier for radio stations to be co-opted by large corporations, NPR plays with the notion that they will not be restricted from accessing the airwaves that are rightfully their own.

NPR made its first public presentation in January 2004 at 21 Grand in Oakland in the form of a five-day event that included contributions from a large roster of accomplished artists and musicians from the geographical and conceptual neighborhood surrounding the gallery. From September 9-October 23, 2004, NPR was one of seven artist collectives who participated in Southern Exposure's 30th anniversary exhibition, The Way We Work. Over the course of thirty days, NPR featured hundreds of neighbors, artists, musicians, community groups, youth, and the public and provided a platform for this community to form and communicate to the public outside of the gallery. Subsequently in February 2005, NPR organized projects at the street level of Artist's Television Access around the theme of indecency and as a part of Chicago's Version 5 festival in April 2005. From July through August 2005, NPR traveled to Novi Sad, Serbia to collaborate with media activists and artists at kuda.org as part of a prestigious CEC ArtsLink grant. NPR has been named "Best Super Local Radio Station" by San Francisco Magazine and has been featured in Punk Planet Magazine, Artforum, and the Chicago Reader.

Most recently NPR was the recipient of a Creative Work Fund grant, which will be used for a collaborative series of projects through Southern Exposure, collectively titled Radio Cartography.
