Daniel Cheek's photographs of some of the Bay Area's peripheral regions, specifically Benicia and Martinez, conflate the quotidian life with encroaching industries, oil refineries, and chemical plants. Though issued major health and environmental citations, these industries remain part of the landscape. Cheek's most recent photographs of sites along Third Street illuminate the stages of redevelopment happening in the southeast region of San Francisco as well as immortalize historical bastions that have been preserved, such as the Bayview Opera House.
Cheek was born in Detroit, Michigan and received his BFA from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco. His work has been exhibited at the Academy of Art College, Sutter Street Gallery, San Francisco; Northeastern Nevada Museum, Elko (2006); Nevada Museum of Art, Reno (2006); Gregory Lind Gallery, San Francisco (2006); and RayKo Gallery, San Francisco (2007).
